About the author

Born on May 5, 1869, Amédée Baillot de Guerville was a French-American freelance war correspondent, editor, and commercial agent who often published as A. B. de Guerville. He is most often remembered for travel writing drawn from his own journeys and reporting.

He wrote about a wide range of places, including East Asia and Egypt, and his books include Au Japon and New Egypt. Contemporary accounts especially connect him with writing on Japan after the Port Arthur events of 1894, when he became known for strongly defending the Japanese side.

De Guerville died on May 21, 1913. Today, he stands out as one of those energetic late-19th- and early-20th-century writers whose books sit between journalism, memoir, and travel narrative.
