About the author

Born in Mannheim in 1815, August Kappler became a German explorer, naturalist, and writer whose name is closely tied to Suriname. He went there in 1836 in Dutch colonial service, and later spent many years working and living along the Marowijne River, where he was associated with the founding of Albina.

Kappler is remembered not only for collecting plants and animals, but also for writing about the land and people he encountered. His books drew on direct experience and helped introduce European readers to Suriname's landscapes, wildlife, and frontier life in the nineteenth century.

He died in 1887. Today, he is mainly of interest to readers drawn to travel writing, natural history, and firsthand accounts of South America in the colonial era.
