by A. (Arturo) Olivieri Sangiacomo
Born in Turin in 1861, Arturo Olivieri Sangiacomo was an Italian writer, journalist, and career military officer. Italian reference sources describe him as a professional soldier who became known as the capitano romanziere—the “captain novelist” — because he turned his experience in the army into fiction and short prose.
His surviving bibliography shows a strong connection to military themes, including Vita nell'esercito: Novelle militari. That blend of service and writing seems to be the defining thread of his work, giving his stories a practical, firsthand feel rather than a distant or purely invented one.
Olivieri Sangiacomo died in Rome on December 25, 1903. He is also remembered as the father of Elsa Olivieri Sangiacomo, later known as Elsa Respighi, the composer, singer, and writer.
