About the author

Arthur Brittain was an English writer and missionary born in 1858 and died in 1918. He is chiefly known as the co-author, with C. Bice, of Journal of Residence in the New Hebrides, S.W. Pacific Ocean, a record of their experiences in the islands during 1886.

That journal survives as Brittain's best-known work and is valued today as a firsthand account of missionary life in the South Pacific. It describes travel in the New Hebrides and the authors' observations of the people and places they encountered, giving modern readers a window into a particular moment in 19th-century colonial and religious history.

Little easily confirmed biographical detail appears to survive online beyond his dates and his connection to this book, so his published journal remains the clearest introduction to his life and work.
