by A. (Anton) Ferrer i Codina
Born in Barcelona in 1837, Antoni Ferrer y Codina was a playwright and newspaper writer whose career was closely tied to the cultural world of Catalonia. He wrote for the stage in both Catalan and Spanish, and his work reached a broad public through commercial theater.
Reference works describe him as an active presence in literary journalism as well as drama. He directed satirical and humorous weeklies including Barcelona Alegre and La Tomasa, and became especially known for theatrical pieces such as Un manresà de l'any vuit and Otger.
His plays were often aimed at popular audiences, mixing historical themes, emotion, and a strong sense of place. He died on October 11, 1905, but his work still offers a vivid glimpse of the theatrical and literary culture of 19th-century Barcelona.
