About the author

Born in 1874, Angus Hamilton was a British writer and journalist who reported for newspapers and journals from the 1890s into the early 1910s. Library of Congress records note that he covered major events including the Boer War in South Africa, the Boxer uprising in China, and the Russo-Japanese War.

He also wrote substantial books drawn from his travels and reporting, including Korea, The Siege of Mafeking, Afghanistan, and Somaliland. Those works mix firsthand observation, political commentary, and the imperial outlook of his era, which makes them both informative and very much products of their time.

Hamilton died in 1913. Today, his books remain of interest to readers curious about historical travel writing, war correspondence, and how British observers described Asia and Africa in the years just before the First World War.
