by A. (Adrien) Guilmin
Born in Brest on March 1, 1812, Adrien Guilmin studied in Brest and at the École normale supérieure. He left the school in 1837 for health reasons and settled in Paris, where he first gave private mathematics lessons.
He later taught at the Lycée Bonaparte, then left in 1853 to run his own independent school. In 1861, he gave up that institution so he could focus entirely on writing educational books for primary schools, lycées, and collèges.
Guilmin is remembered as a French mathematics teacher and prolific author of instructional works. His publications included arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry, applied mathematics, and cosmography, and some of his textbooks went through many editions. He died in Paris on February 20, 1884, and was buried in Bourg-la-Reine.
