by A. A. Soares de (Antonio Augusto Soares) Passos
Born in Porto on November 27, 1826, António Augusto Soares de Passos grew up in a merchant family and learned French and English while still young. He later studied law at the University of Coimbra, where he moved in literary circles that helped shape his career as a poet.
Soares de Passos became one of the best-known figures of Portuguese ultra-Romanticism. His writing is closely associated with strong emotion, sadness, and an attraction to darker themes, qualities that made his poetry especially memorable to later readers.
He died in Porto on February 8, 1860, at only 33 years old. Even with such a brief life, he remained an important name in Portuguese poetry, and he is still remembered through collections such as Poesias and for the influence of his intensely lyrical style.
