About the author

Born in 1878 in the Netherlands, August Adriaan Pulle trained as a botanist and built his career at Utrecht University, where he later became a professor. He is best remembered for his work on tropical plants, especially the flora of Suriname.

Pulle took part in scientific expeditions and devoted much of his research to cataloguing and describing the vegetation of Suriname and neighboring areas. His name is closely linked with major botanical works on the region, including studies and reference volumes that gave researchers a stronger foundation for understanding South American plant life.

He died in 1955, but his legacy continued through the plant collections, publications, and taxonomic work associated with his name. For listeners interested in natural history, he stands out as one of those scholars whose patient, behind-the-scenes research opened up an entire landscape to later science.
