Young people abroad

Mary Burton is a capable, good-hearted girl whose days are filled with school, housework, and an endless supply of apples to pare. When her cousin Ethol prepares to sail for Europe, Mary feels a wistful longing to see the ocean and explore the wider world herself. Then, while working in the kitchen, she discovers an ingenious way to begin her journey without leaving home.

With borrowed books, a lively imagination, and a determination to keep a travel diary, Mary sets out to learn about the cities and people Ethol will encounter abroad. Her imagined adventures lead listeners through places such as Berne, Switzerland, while introducing geography, history, customs, and memorable sights in an accessible, story-filled way. Warmly humorous and full of youthful curiosity, this journey invites young listeners to look beyond familiar surroundings and discover how far imagination—and a good book—can carry them.
