Gissing lives alone in a modest country house nestled amid the Canine Estates, his only companion a diligent Japanese pug named Fuji. He enjoys a carefree routine—clubs, theatres, and nightly pipe‑smokes—yet maintains a quiet formality that masks a lingering unease. Despite a modest allowance that spares him financial worries, something invisible tugs at his thoughts as twilight settles over the garden.
The serenity is broken by a soft, melancholy whistle that drifts from a nearby pond, rising night after night like a secret summons. Gissing seeks explanations from the local parson and even the constable, but they dismiss it as frogs, leaving him convinced that a deeper, perhaps divine, presence is at work. The inexplicable sounds stir a restless yearning within his otherwise ordered life.
Compelled by the strange blue of the evening sky and the lingering scent of pine, Gissing steps beyond his familiar verandah, drawn toward the unseen source of the haunting melody. What begins as a simple curiosity hints at an adventure that may finally loosen the bonds of his self‑imposed solitude.
