Description

A seasoned sea‑captain named Julian Braithwaite steers his modest steam‑yacht Albatross through the remote waters between Erromanga and Fiji, trading copra and cocoa‑nut while seeking a dose of tropical health. One quiet morning his keen Polynesian lookout, Nassaline, spots a lone, drifting English row‑boat on the horizon—a sight so rare in those empty stretches that it sparks both curiosity and unease. The crew, wary of the region’s notorious labor‑trade vessels, rounds up to investigate the mysterious craft and the faint signals of distress it sends.

As the Albatross draws nearer, the captain must decide whether to intervene in what could be a desperate rescue or a hidden trap, all while navigating the tangled politics of island societies and the perils of open sea. The story unfurls with vivid nautical detail, a touch of humor, and a palpable sense of wonder at the vast, uncharted Pacific that challenges every sailor’s resolve.
