A bustling tavern in Inkeri, 1861, opens the play with a lively mix of peasants, servants, and a few aristocratic figures whose sharp tongues and quick jokes set a vivid scene of everyday life on the Finnish frontier. As the boys dart about, toss dice and tease one another, the girls stitch and sing, their simple folk song drifting through the smoke‑filled room and hinting at deeper bonds among the cramped community. The chatter between characters like the boisterous Matti, the wistful Liisa, and the skeptical Andrei reveals a world where duty, ambition and local rivalries flicker beneath the surface of ordinary chores.
Soon the arrival of Roponen—a wealthy farmer returning home—promises to stir the fragile balance, while the younger folk, especially Juhana and his companions, push the limits of their adolescent freedom. Their playful verses and occasional barbs hint at hidden loyalties and unspoken grievances that will ripple through the village, setting the stage for a spirited struggle between tradition and change.

A restless journalist and idealist, he moved through Finland, Australia, Canada, and the United States chasing big social dreams. His life is closely tied to the story of Sointula, the short-lived Finnish utopian settlement on Malcolm Island.
