Description

On the banks of a slow river a new schoolhouse watches the water glide, its bright windows framing a meadow, singing birds and a modest garden of roses. Young Mauri, an only child of humble farmers, helps with horses, rows a tiny boat, and spends afternoons in a classroom where the gentle teacher Kotiranta turns stars and angels into stories that spark his imagination. In this quiet village the boy feels both the safety of home and a faint yearning for something beyond.

Mauri’s days brighten when he befriends Kyllikki, a spirited girl with red ribbons who shares his fishing trips and the schoolyard songs they sing together. By the river they count catches, trade tales of distant golden lands, and let their imaginations wander toward adventures they have never seen. Their simple, sun‑lit afternoons hint at the choices that will later pull Mauri away from the familiar fields toward an uncertain future.
