In the mid‑nineteenth century a court physician turned his curiosity toward the famed healing reputation of the North Sea coast. He sets out to move beyond anecdotes, asking how the salty air and regular sea bathing actually affect the human body. The work blends detailed chemical analysis with fresh physiological observations, aiming to translate the therapeutic lore into measurable science.
Based on a five‑week stay on the island of Wangerooge, the author recorded his own reactions while noting similar recoveries among children treated in English seaside towns. He compares the influence of sea‑borne vapors with the physical act of immersion, carefully cataloguing changes in skin, glands and general vitality. Though his data come from a single subject, the study invites further inquiry and offers a rare glimpse into early medical experimentation on the benefits of coastal environments.

A 19th-century German physician and medical writer, he helped shape early thinking about pathology, metabolism, and the health effects of climate and sea bathing. His work linked academic medicine with practical public health concerns in places like Marburg, Bad Nauheim, and Norderney.
