Two Plus Two Makes Crazy
**two
In Computer City, numbers are more than tools—they are the unquestioned foundation of government, industry, and everyday life. Every department has its own specialized machine, translating problems into official terms, while a master system gathers the results into Verdict Statements that dictate how society should behave. Krayton, a polished public liaison officer, takes pride in explaining this perfectly ordered system to visitors.
But Mr. Tanter, a strange, quiet emissary from the Information Department, asks deceptively simple questions. As he learns about the powerful All circuit and the underground Prims, uneasy contradictions begin to surface beneath the city’s stainless-steel certainty. If every computer is infallible, what happens when they disagree—and what does “two plus two” mean when security, food, war, and public information each demand a different answer?
This brisk, imaginative satire probes the dangers of surrendering judgment to systems that promise perfect logic. Its clipped humor and surreal bureaucracy offer a sharp, entertaining look at conformity, authority, and the human cost of letting numbers think for us.
