Pascal Halmer is a clever, struggling writer with a profitable secret: he scavenges old stories, reshapes their plots, and passes them off as original fiction. His battered typewriter has helped him turn borrowed ideas into popular tales, and after years of drudgery, the machine considers itself more than a tool—it is his loyal collaborator, confidant, and friend.
But success changes Halmer. Distracted by new amusements and impatient with his aging typewriter’s balky keys, faded ribbon, and failing mechanism, he decides to replace the faithful machine. His rejection awakens something in it: resentment, wounded pride, and a fierce determination to prove its worth. When Halmer begins one last stolen story before the replacement arrives, the boundary between writer and instrument starts to blur. This eerie science-fiction tale explores creative fraud, misplaced loyalty, and what can happen when an old machine develops a will of its own.

A little-known mid-century speculative fiction writer, Arthur T. Harris specialized in strange, sharp-edged tales where everyday objects and familiar settings conceal uncanny dangers. His stories blend mystery, fantasy, dark humor, and a distinctly pulp-era sense of surprise.
