Set against the backdrop of the late eighteenth century, this vivid journal follows a determined Scottish explorer as he journeys through the Horn of Africa in search of the Nile’s mysterious source. The narrative weaves together vivid descriptions of scorching deserts, tangled jungles and towering peaks with sketches of the peoples he encounters, from nomadic tribes to isolated hill communities. Along the way the author reflects on the shifting motives of discovery, contrasting earlier ambitions of conquest with the newer Enlightenment spirit of scientific inquiry.
Readers are treated to firsthand accounts of the logistical headaches of moving men, mules and supplies through hostile terrain, as well as the unexpected kindness of locals who share water, stories and guidance. The work records early measurements of river flow, observations of flora and fauna, and tentative maps that would later influence European geography. Though the ultimate answer to the Nile’s source remains just out of reach, the volume captures the awe and perseverance that defined an age of exploration.
