URHO HAAPANEN
Set in the harsh yet hopeful fields of early twentieth‑century Finland, the play follows Matti Mättila, a diligent tenant farmer, and his wife Liisa as they tend to their modest homestead. In the quiet of their cottage they share tender moments, singing lullabies and dreaming of a brighter future now that the land finally feels level and productive. Their conversation reveals a deep bond forged by hard labor, perseverance, and a belief that honest work will bring reward.
Beyond the couple’s hearth, the story introduces the imposing estate owner Kuusela and fellow tenant Pekka Peikkala, whose ambitions and frustrations stir the fragile balance of rural life. The characters grapple with the demands of the land, the pressure to provide for their families, and the looming uncertainty of what the next harvest might bring. As hopes rise and doubts surface, listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of community, duty, and the timeless search for security.
