Description

In the heat‑blazed township of Wallandoon, young John Swift watches the dust‑laden road for a distant coach, his nerves as taut as the wires on the homestead’s fences. The sprawling sheep station, once a quiet family haven, now hums with the restless energy of change, its iron roofs shimmering against a relentless sun. As the coach approaches, Swift’s thoughts turn to the man who sent it—Mr. Luttrell, a wealthy squatter turned politician whose arrival could reshape everything.

The stakes are immediate: Swift, still new to the role of manager, must prove he can keep the fences steady while the sheep tend to themselves, a task made harder by recent missteps and a fickle overseer. Luttrell’s visit promises both opportunity and scrutiny, forcing Swift to balance loyalty to his employer with the harsh realities of outback life. Listeners are drawn into a world of dusty horizons, quiet ambition, and the uneasy tension of a man on the brink of proving himself.

E. W. (Ernest William) Hornung

1866–1921

Best remembered as the creator of A. J. Raffles, the charming gentleman thief, he helped turn crime fiction on its head by making the criminal the hero. His stories mix wit, suspense, and a sharp feel for late-Victorian and Edwardian life.
