This is Klon Calling

Professor Lyman Dane is a brilliant rocket scientist with a taste for theatrical pranks. At Southwestern Tech, his outrageous demonstrations and sly one-liners make even difficult physics entertaining, while his expertise in propulsion has earned him access to the secretive Air Force Development Center nearby. Dane can calculate routes to the Moon, Mars, and Venus—but he is less interested in official seriousness than in finding new ways to make his colleagues laugh.
That changes when a mild, humorless FBI agent arrives with questions about the strange objects being tracked in the skies. With unexplained streaks rising from the military base and rumors of unidentified craft near Atlanta, the government is tightening security around the scientists who may know what is happening. Dane greets the investigation with jokes, but his curiosity—and his knowledge—could place him at the center of a mystery reaching far beyond ordinary earthly experiments.
