Description

Aboard the grand Indiaman Ruby, a well‑heeled traveler sets out for Bombay, eager to trace routes once taken by merchants, pirates and explorers alike. The ship cuts through the Indian Ocean under a golden sunset, its decks alive with the hum of a forthcoming birthday celebration for Captain Bow—a seasoned, unassuming commander who commands respect as surely as the wind fills the sails. Passengers and crew prepare a makeshift ballroom on the poop deck, stringing bunting and lighting lamps, while the air swells with the scent of sea‑salted brine and warm spices.

The evening promises music, dancing, and a toast to the captain’s half‑century of service, a rare moment of mirth amid the relentless heat of the tropics. Yet as the festivities begin, the calm surface of the water hints at an unseen swell, and the crew’s practiced eyes turn wary, aware that the sea can turn from a gentle cradle to a perilous foe without warning. This opening sets a vivid stage of adventure, camaraderie, and the thin line between celebration and danger.
