The thin, cold air of a Martian night hangs between two bright moons, casting an eerie glow over the bustling spaceport of ancient Syrtis. Earth engineer Kenniston steps out of a rundown building, his hopes sinking as the docked ships—massive liners, freighters, a sleek cruiser—are all out of reach. Beside him, the hulking Jovian Holk Or mutters about the impossibility of finding a small vessel, their deadline looming: a valuable asteroid must be reached within two weeks. Desperation forces the pair to eye a torpedo‑shaped cruiser being used by a party of wealthy Earth youths on a thrill‑seeking cruise.
Kenniston decides to gamble on the fact that the glamorous guests may tire of their vacation and part with the ship. He and Holk Or slip through the moonlit streets toward the glassy Terra Hotel, where Earth‑conditioned comforts clash with the stark Martian landscape. Inside the opulent lobby, the duo confronts skeptical staff and the watchful eyes of the Planet Patrol, setting the stage for a risky negotiation that could decide their fate.
