Description

In a sun‑kissed corner of the English countryside, a young farmhand and his spirited companion spend a June day gathering hay beneath a lone ash tree. The landscape rolls from golden fields to a shimmering brook that winds toward a distant, low‑lying sea, its salty breath lending a quiet grandeur to the humble lane. Their routine is simple, their laughter easy, but the evening light casts a gentle melancholy over the scene, hinting at deeper currents beneath the everyday work.

When the harvest ends, the pair pause on a rustic stile, and a conversation finally surfaces about the future that looms over them. Gilbert’s love for Dolly is clear, yet the stern expectations of his father and the weight of family duty loom like the ridge on the horizon. Their resolve is tested as they weigh the pull of affection against the call of conscience, leaving both to wonder which voice will guide the path they must choose.
