Description

A dusty stretch of Dyea’s main street bustles with prospectors, traders and wanderers, all drawn to a rickety table where Mr. “Lucky” Broad performs his uncanny street‑side game. With a flourish he slides a ten‑dollar bill across the wood, flips three worn walnut shells and hides a tiny pill that seems to dart of its own accord. His rapid, sing‑song patter—part boast, part tease—keeps the crowd hanging on every word, promising fortunes to anyone daring enough to stare at the moving speck.

Around him a motley audience gathers: a weary Norwegian miner, a skeptical newcomer, and a hard‑working prospector dreaming of Klondike riches. Broad’s charisma masks a sharper edge; his tricks are as much about reading people as they are about sleight of hand. As the stakes rise and the onlookers’ hopes flicker, the air hums with the tension between luck and loss, hinting that the road ahead may be as unpredictable as the tiny ball itself.

Adventure, gold-rush ambition, courtroom fights, and frontier grit run through these fast-moving stories by one of the great popular novelists of the early 1900s. He drew heavily on his own years chasing fortune in Alaska, giving his fiction an energetic, lived-in feel.
