Description

A fierce, rain‑swept night on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan sets the stage, where a ragged surf‑boat creaks through mud‑flooded dunes while a dozen horses struggle under the lash of a cracked whip. The driver, his lantern a lone yellow island in the darkness, watches a massive steamer battle the breakers, fearing that its crew may be lost forever. Around the flickering bonfire, students in soaked coats rally the townsfolk, their shouts and makeshift drums echoing over the roar of the lake.

At the heart of the chaos is a tall, quick‑moving young student, his chestnut curls barely hidden beneath a small cap. He commands the rescue with a blend of urgency and bravado, urging men and boys alike to haul the boat down the steep, clay‑slick road. As the surf‑boat finally lurches forward, the scene crackles with both hope and danger, promising a daring effort that will test the resolve of every hand that pulls.
