THE WALTZ OF THE DOGS
A cold, half‑finished drawing room opens the play, its angular furniture and glossy piano a stark backdrop for two house painters humming a wordless tune. Carl Tile, a lanky student with a nervous habit of striking the table, prowls the space while obsessively counting a meagre twenty‑five rubles he has “found.” He reveals his desperate plans to cheat, gamble and even contemplate murder, all underscored by his sudden, eerie whistles that echo the painters’ melancholy song.
When Henry Tile, Carl’s brother, arrives with a small entourage of bank associates and the ever‑smiling former schoolmate “Feklusha,” the atmosphere shifts from solitary scheming to strained hospitality. Polite chatter masks an undercurrent of rivalry and hidden motives, as the brothers’ starkly different temperaments clash amid the unfinished décor. The first act sets the stage for a tense, character‑driven drama where money, loyalty and ambition begin their uneasy waltz.
