Tommy Stubbins, the cobbler’s son in the riverside town of Puddleby, spends his afternoons on the old stone bridge, feet dangling over the water, singing shanties with the sailors as their ships pass. He dreams of far‑off places—Africa, India, China—while watching the brown sails loom like gentle giants over the rooftops. With his friend Joe the mussel‑man, he learns to mend toy ships and watches the marsh life, longing for adventure beyond his narrow streets.
One day the famed Doctor Dolittle arrives, a man who converses with animals and keeps a centuries‑old parrot named Polynesia, whose memory rivals any notebook. Tommy is invited into a world of exotic creatures and voyages that promise to turn his imagined journeys into reality. The narrator’s recollections, guided by Polynesia’s sharp recall, set the stage for a tale of curiosity, friendship, and the wild wonders waiting beyond the riverbank.
Together they set sail, learning that the greatest discoveries begin with listening to the world around them. Listeners will find themselves swept along by the Doctor’s gentle humor and the vivid chorus of animal voices.
