Description

Humanity’s first venture beyond its solar system has reached the Sirius system, where a small expedition is building a foothold among unfamiliar landscapes and stranger life. But the arrival of the Primes—a vastly advanced star race whose elegant ship and unsettling authority dwarf the human settlement—turns triumph into crisis. Their message is blunt: Earth must withdraw until humanity becomes civilized enough to earn permission to expand.

Mission leader Owen Coulter returns to the Unis determined to rally his crew and find a way forward, even as resentment spreads among those who refuse to accept the Primes’ judgment. Nearby, the silent, watchful Stampers—primitive beings unable to hear or speak—add another layer of mystery to an already tense situation. As the expedition’s scientists, linguists, and settlers gather to debate their response, they must confront an uncomfortable question: are humans explorers bringing progress to a new world, or intruders who have yet to understand the civilization around them?
