Description

Constance Forbes has spent her life moving from the quiet farm of Colton to the bustling streets of Benham, clutching a modest nest‑egg left by her late parents. On a delayed train after a minor wreck, she strikes up a conversation with Emil Stuart, a bright‑eyed clerk who is just beginning his own business. Their exchange turns from the mechanics of the accident to a surprising mutual curiosity, and a tentative attraction blossoms amid the scattered freight and lingering smoke.

Faced with the choice between a solitary career in education and a partnership grounded in love, Constance decides to trust her heart. The modest wedding, presided over by the earnest Reverend Prentiss, reflects both their youthful optimism and the practical concerns of a small income. As they step into married life, they must navigate the tension between ambition and devotion, hoping their bond will endure the inevitable currents of change.
