Description

The story opens with a sharp‑tongued young woman fresh from a Beaux‑Arts architecture program, whisked from the slow‑moving hills of Tennessee to the bustling cafés of Paris. She narrates love as a volatile gas that must somehow be bottled, sprinkling her reflections with humor and a hint of frustration at the expectations placed on women. Her lively voice drifts between the academic triumph of her thesis on twentieth‑century gardens and the restless pull of destiny that seems to accompany every decision.

On a ship bound for an uncertain future, she meets the charismatic Richard Hall, whose “honest eyes” ignite a fleeting yet intense connection. Back on shore, her steadfast friend Jane Mathers presses a mysterious “glorious mission” onto her, promising purpose but hinting at danger. As the narrator balances ambition, affection, and a looming sense of obligation, she finds herself perched on the edge of a tinder‑box that could ignite everything she holds dear.
