The Temple
In the summer of 1917, Lieutenant-Commander Karl Heinrich commands a German U-boat on a ruthless wartime mission in the Atlantic. After sinking a British freighter, the crew discovers a drowned sailor clutching an exquisitely carved ivory head—an unsettling relic that seems to carry a history far older than the war.
As the submarine patrol continues, the men grow ill, suffer disturbing dreams, and report visions of corpses drifting beyond the hull. A mysterious current pulls the disabled vessel southward, while rumors spread that the dead are watching from the deep. The commander responds with discipline and contempt for superstition, but even his iron certainty begins to weaken as the sea presents increasingly inexplicable signs. Told as a final record from a submarine stranded on the ocean floor, this atmospheric horror story builds dread through confined spaces, mounting isolation, and the suggestion that something ancient may be stirring beneath the waves.

A master of cosmic horror, H. P. Lovecraft transformed fear of the unknown into vast, otherworldly mythology. His eerie tales of ancient beings, forbidden knowledge, and fragile human sanity helped inspire the modern weird-fiction tradition.
