Description

Nan bursts into the dawn of a narrow, soot‑stained town with a shrill, relentless cry that rattles sparrows from their feed and drags weary laborers from their doors. Her voice, raw and uncompromising, pierces the clatter of early factories and the stale air of a cramped kitchen where the walls seem to close in. In this gritty setting, Nan is a force of nature—an angry, outspoken woman trapped in a marriage that pays her a pittance and offers little more than a threadbare apron and a stale routine.

Around her, a cast of weary neighbors—Polly, the timid observer, and Cherry, the beleaguered wife—watch as Nan’s fury escalates into a full‑scale “sweeping out” that rattles the household’s fragile peace. The early chapters set the stage for a clash between duty and defiance, hinting at alliances and confrontations that will test the limits of loyalty, pride, and the quiet hope for change.
