Part 1
A battered freighter touches down on a cloud‑shrouded world, leaving a weary crew to grapple with a damaged hull and dwindling supplies. Steward Peter Kolin, forced into a reluctant scouting detail, joins a small team of cooks and ration keepers under the stern eye of Chief Steward Slichow. Their orders are simple yet tense: locate any source of natural food before the ship’s emergency watches are overwhelmed.
The trio treks through jagged ridges into a mist‑laden valley where bronze‑green creepers give way to a dense, alien forest. Odd, shimmering plants and bursts of floating spores hint at a biosphere that is both beautiful and unforgiving. Among the tangled underbrush they discover a curious shrub bearing glossy purple berries, and an unsettling rustle suggests the forest itself might have a voice. As they push deeper, the line between scouting mission and survival test begins to blur, leaving the crew to wonder what other secrets the planet’s vegetation may hold.

A mid-century science fiction writer with a knack for human-alien encounters, he built stories around contact, misunderstanding, and survival in space. His work appeared widely in the pulp and digest magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, and many of his tales later found new readers through reprints and public-domain editions.
