Description

The story opens in early 17th‑century Sweden, a nation freshly risen to power under ambitious monarchs and eager to expand its influence beyond Europe. Driven by a mix of mercantile ambition and religious idealism, a group of investors and adventurers form the New Sweden Company, setting their sights on the fertile banks of the Delaware River. Their first expedition arrives in 1638, staking a modest settlement that they name Fort Christina. The narrative weaves together the political turmoil at home with the promise of a new world, giving listeners a clear picture of why a distant kingdom would risk a transatlantic venture.

At Fort Christina, the colonists grapple with harsh winters, scarce supplies, and the complex diplomacy of the Lenape peoples who already inhabit the valley. Governor Johan Printz attempts to impose Swedish law and commerce while also adapting to indigenous customs, creating a unique blend of European and Native practices. Through vivid descriptions of log‑cabins, wampum trade, and early governance, the book paints a lively portrait of an experimental settlement striving to survive.
