The Song of Roland

The tale opens in the heat of Charlemagne’s seventh campaign across Spain, where the Frankish emperor has already taken city after city. Beneath the looming fortress of Saragossa, the Muslim king Marsile gathers his counsellors, uneasy and desperate, and debates how to confront the unstoppable Frankish host. A cunning pagan advisor, Blancandrin, proposes sending gifts and hostages to the emperor in hopes of buying peace.

The envoys depart with olive branches, bearing wealth and promises of conversion, while the French camp revels in its recent victories and the splendor of captured treasure. Within the French lines, Roland and his companions prepare for the battles that will test their loyalty and bravery. Listeners are drawn into a world of clashing cultures, solemn oaths, and the echo of drums that foretell a legendary conflict.
