Description

Henry Whitman shuffles home from the shoe‑shop each April afternoon, his thoughts as heavy as the leaky roof of the modest house he inherited. The green meadows and budding trees mask a bitter resentment that has followed him through years of constant labor, thin wages, and mounting debts. He measures his life against the towering fortunes of the town’s employers, feeling the weight of every unpaid bill and missed opportunity pressing down on his shoulders.

Behind him, Sylvia keeps the household afloat, taking in a boarder, baking, and tending a garden that adds a fleeting splash of colour to their gray existence. Henry’s pride in his union work battles with a disdain for the gleaming automobiles that thunder past, symbols of wealth he both envies and condemns. As the seasons turn, his quiet determination to mend his home and protect his family hints at a struggle that may finally shift the balance of his weary world.
