Description

In 1995, Trevor Anson is a salesman at Tracy’s Department Store, where the latest household innovation is the Plasti-Cast Roboid. Guided by a bewildering manual of sales rules, he greets each customer with a carefully measured smile, studies their personality, and steers them toward the model most likely to close the deal. But his newest prospects—a skeptical, hot-tempered husband and his fascinated wife—are proving unusually difficult.

The Roboids are grown rather than assembled, tailored to a family’s personality, and designed to serve without food or rest. Yet Anson cannot demonstrate one, explain exactly how it works, or reassure a customer who imagines mechanical servants turning on their owners. As the sale begins to slip away, his polished training collides with questions no sales guide seems prepared to answer. This light, satirical science-fiction story explores consumer anxiety, domestic technology, and the unsettling limits of persuasive selling.
