On a sun‑blazed balcony overlooking the St. Lawrence, Captain Daniel Menard watches a procession of chained Iroquois being forced onto French warships. The grim scene—soldiers beating the prisoners, a crowd scrambling for beads—contrasts sharply with the bustle of Lower Town beneath the citadel. Menard feels the uneasy mix of duty and boredom that has come to define his years on the frontier.
The new governor, Denonville, has ordered this brutal display, hoping to crush Indigenous resistance once and for all. Menard, who has spent fifteen years navigating alliances and conflicts between French forts and the Five Nations, senses that such force may spark a more dangerous game of intrigue. As the ships prepare to leave for France, the captain contemplates the fragile balance of power that hangs over Quebec and the wilderness beyond.
