CHAPTER VII THE SPIRIT OF THE JOB
A massive railroad venture is poised to transform the fledgling town of Sherman into a bustling hub, but the first train bound for the western frontier sits idle under a scorching spring sun. The weary laborers, packed like cattle in stale cars, sweat and mutter as the engine’s whistle sounds without a destination. Behind the scenes, the superintendent, Peet, and chief engineer, Tiffany, scramble to keep the schedule, their arguments echoing the urgency of a project that promises steel and glass stations for a future metropolis.
Tension spikes when a seemingly minor delay threatens to halt progress: the mysterious Purple Finn, hired only as a cook, has not yet arrived, and the crew’s morale wavers amid ethnic clashes and restless workers. As the men argue over the missing chief engineer, the promise of “Red Hills or bust” hangs over them, hinting at the rugged terrain they must conquer. The story captures the raw energy of early 20th‑century enterprise, the clash of personalities, and the relentless drive to lay tracks across an unforgiving landscape.
