In a sharply observed satire of early twentieth‑century society, the narrator declares that humanity—“the restless sex”—has fashioned its own gods only to find that invention fuels even greater restlessness. Against this backdrop a lone child is born, an unexpected by‑product of two aimless lives, and the narrative pits the newborn’s uncertain fate against the absurdities of a world that worships its own created monsters.
Harry Quest is an itinerant actor, charming yet morally untethered, whose fragile health drives him toward desperate experiments with narcotics. He pairs with Laura Conway, a tireless picture‑tinter and ice‑skater, whose modest labor sustains them both as they navigate a precarious marriage. Their newborn arrives into a swirl of idle longing, addiction, and the lingering question of whether the restless nature of their sex can ever find contentment.

Best known today for the eerie stories in The King in Yellow, he was an American writer and trained artist whose work ranged from supernatural fiction to historical romance and popular magazine fiction. His reputation has endured largely because those uncanny tales went on to influence later horror writers.
