THE RAVEN
On a bleak December midnight, a weary scholar sits alone in his chamber, searching old books for relief from grief over the lost Lenore. As the fire fades and shadows stir across the room, a soft tapping interrupts his troubled thoughts. He opens the door expecting a visitor, but finds only darkness—and hears an echo of the beloved name he cannot forget.
The disturbance returns at the window, where a stately raven suddenly enters and settles above the chamber door. The bird’s solemn bearing and single, unnerving reply, “Nevermore,” first amuse the narrator, then draw him into uneasy speculation. Richly rhythmic and steeped in Gothic atmosphere, this classic narrative poem explores mourning, memory, and the mind’s desperate search for meaning. The accompanying period illustrations deepen its shadowy world, giving visual form to the lonely chamber, the ominous bird, and the haunting boundary between sorrow and the supernatural.

A master of mystery, melancholy, and the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe helped shape the modern short story, detective fiction, and psychological horror. His haunting poems and tales—including “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”—remain among the most influential works in American literature.
