On a peaceful summer cruise off Newfoundland, recent Harvard graduate Tom Jones is enjoying a well-earned break aboard his yacht, the Miami. The calm ends when armed strangers seize the vessel, bind the crew, and transfer aboard a mysterious cargo disguised as canned goods.
Tom soon learns that his captors are not ordinary smugglers. They are gun-runners bound for Costa Rica, with the British Navy reportedly on their trail—and they may need the Miami and its passengers to maintain a convincing front. His adventurous fantasies of tropical revolutions and romantic intrigue quickly give way to the uncomfortable reality of being held prisoner by ruthless men.
Among those at risk is the navigator’s spirited teenage daughter, Theresa, whose sailor’s clothing and cropped hair lead the criminals to mistake her for a boy. As the hijackers take control of the yacht and settle in for their dangerous voyage, Tom must keep his wits about him and find a way to protect everyone aboard.
