Description

Amid the rolling prairies of the Mississippi theater, a Union camp swarms with weary soldiers, their colorful tents and fluttering flags a stark contrast to the looming specter of war. Captain Hayward, a battle‑scarred officer, grapples with a personal ache: his sister has chosen to stay beside him, despite the perils that surround the makeshift encampment. Their uneasy camaraderie with fellow officers reveals a mix of bravado and melancholy, as each man wrestles with the romantic myths of heroism against the harsh reality of guerrilla‑ridden roads.

The narrative follows Hayward’s attempts to protect his sister while the army prepares for a decisive clash with Confederate forces. As rumors of an imminent engagement spread, the camp’s fragile sense of normalcy teeters on the edge of danger, and the presence of a mysterious prisoner at a nearby mill hints at secrets that could jeopardize both the soldiers and the women they hold dear. The story captures the tension between duty, family, and the unforgiving landscape of Civil War America.
