Description

A vivid portrait of a fading aristocratic world unfolds in a bustling bun‑house where a once‑glittering lady, Betty Spadille, tries to cling to her former splendor. The narrator watches her arrive in a peach‑coloured sacque, surrounded by flamboyant gentlemen, tinkling violins, and lavish platters of French wine, strawberries and cherries. The scene is painted with sharp humor—loud laughter, exaggerated gestures, and a parade of footmen who replace the humble tablecloth with silver‑ed service. Amid the chatter, a slender black‑dressed maid shadows Lady Betty, while a quiet observer, Mr. Fenwick, records the spectacle from his window.

The gathering brings together a motley crew: the weak‑eyed Earlstoke, the foppish Sir Charles, the handsome Mr. Arbuthnot, and the sharp‑tongued Caryl, each embodying a different facet of the era’s social dance. Through witty dialogue and keen observation, the story captures the uneasy balance between genteel pretence and the inevitable march of time, inviting listeners to glimpse the delicate comedy of a society on the brink of change.
