Description

The work opens with a vivid portrait of the Ohio River as the lifeline of the early American frontier. It traces how indigenous canoes gave way to the pioneering pirogue, then to massive barges and flat‑boats that criss‑crossed the waterway, hauling furniture, livestock and supplies. The author paints a colorful picture of the rugged boatmen—often lawless yet surprisingly reliable—whose labor turned a slow, arduous journey into a dependable commercial artery.

By the 1810s the river sees its first steam‑powered vessels, a technological leap that accelerates movement of cotton, timber and manufactured items. The narrative follows how these faster craft reshaped settlements along the banks, spurring rapid population growth and a bustling market for everything from farm tools to fine cloth. At the same time, waves of emigrants use the river to reach the interior, turning once‑remote outposts into thriving towns whose fortunes rise with each downstream voyage.
