Description

The story opens on a wind‑swept stretch of the Antrim coast, where a narrow road snakes between towering limestone cliffs and restless sand dunes. The narrator’s love of the landscape is palpable, from the roaring Atlantic to the ghostly ruins of Dunseveric Castle, and those vivid sketches set the tone for a tale rooted in the rugged beauty of northern Ireland. Against this backdrop the year is 1798, a time when the island’s political tensions are simmering and the land seems to remember every ancient grievance.

In the shadow of the cliffs stands a stark, three‑storey meeting‑house, its bleak granite walls turned northward to face the sea. Inside, a small group of Presbyterian worshippers and their minister’s man confront the looming conflict, their lives intertwined with the wild environment and the whispered rumors of rebellion. As the storm winds howl, the characters must decide whether to cling to old loyalties or be swept into the sweeping changes that the era promises.
