The Nibelungenlied is the great medieval German epic that has long stood beside the Iliad as a cornerstone of world literature. This revised translation brings the original’s vivid courtly world and fierce battles to modern ears, preserving the poem’s striking rhythm while clarifying its archaic language. The introduction explains how the work, though rooted in twelfth‑century castles and customs, resonates with universal themes of honor, love, and vengeance.
In the first act, we meet the heroic dragon‑slayer Siegfried, his dazzling arrival at the Burgundian court, and the fierce rivalry that springs between him and the enigmatic Hagen. Their interactions set a tense stage of feasting, oaths, and uneasy alliances, hinting at the tragic chain of events to come. Listeners will be drawn into a tightly woven drama where each deed follows the next, promising a powerful and emotionally charged journey.
