Description

A rain‑soaked night on the French‑German frontier finds a makeshift French outpost squatting in a humble cottage, its flickering candlelight casting shadows over intercepted German dispatches and a handful of wounded soldiers. Captain Arnault, weary yet vigilant, shares the cramped space with Surgeon Surville, an English nurse named Mercy Merrick, and a lone traveling lady, Grace Roseberry, who has been diverted from her journey to England. The fragile calm is punctuated by whispered anxieties about a possible surprise attack, as each character balances duty, curiosity, and the stark realities of war.

The arrival of the two women raises subtle tensions; the captain’s guarded hospitality hints at deeper secrets hidden behind the shuttered window. As the night deepens, the wounded await respite while the officers debate whether the cottage can truly offer safety, and the strangers must decide how far they will let curiosity lead them into danger. The stage is set for a tense encounter where loyalties are tested and the thin line between hospitality and peril becomes ever more uncertain.
