When the first Earth ship touched down on Venus, the planet’s long‑held mystery dissolved into endless, pliant mud. The surface was a kaleidoscope of colors—gray, black, brown, even blue—sprouting sparse foliage and home to small native beings that lived beneath the slick, warm ooze. Corporations quickly saw opportunity, especially Piper Pharmaceuticals, whose R&D team sensed that the murky ground might hide something far more valuable than the mud itself.
Enter Robert Kielland, a reluctant investigator thrust into the violet‑stained swamp at the company’s urging. He’s tasked with untangling why the massive investment is yielding scant returns, all while navigating the unsettling atmosphere of a planet that seems to swallow its own technology. As his landing craft steadies for a final touchdown, a sudden sink threatens to plunge the crew into the very mud they hoped to exploit. Kielland must decide whether his sharp mind can pull the project from the mire before everything—both human and alien— is lost beneath the slick surface.
